Sikkim is the state in India. Gangtok is the capital of this state. It is located in the Himalayan mountains. Spread below the Mount Khanchendzonga (8534 meters), the third highest mountain in the world, and revered by the Sikkimese as their protective deity. Amidst the grandeur of the mountain peaks, lush valleys, fast flowing rivers, hills, Sikkim offers her visitors a rare and singular experience. Within a matter of hours one can move from the sub tropical heat of the lower valleys to the cold of the rugged mountain slopes that reach up to the area of perpetual snow. Gangtok is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of Sikkim. It also is the headquarters of the East Sikkim district. Gangtok is located in the eastern Himalayan range, at an elevation of 1,650 m (5,410 ft). The precise meaning of the name "Gangtok" is "hill top". It perfectly suits those coming from cities and looking for great weather, sightseeing, good food, comfortable stays with modern facilities, and nice shopping opportunities. High mountain passes, clear glacial lakes, adventurous trekking trails, and monasteries in the clouds - the hills of Gangtok make for one refreshing ride.

North Sikkim is the largest district of the Indian state of Sikkim. Its district headquarters is Mangan. Numerous waterfalls astride the main road make the trip to this district extremely picturesque. Most of North Sikkim is restricted to travelers and permits are needed to visit these areas as it shares a sensitive border with China. However, in view of exquisite scenic beauty, a large number of tourists have started visiting the region.
