Lakshadweep means "a hundred thousand islands" in Malayalam, the local language. However there are only 36 islands having a total area of 32 sq. kilometers. It is the tiniest Union Territory of India with 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. Ten Islands are inhabited. They are Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra,Chetlat,Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy.
The advent of Islam dates back to the 7th century. St. Ubaidulla of Mecca dreamt that prophet Mohammed wanted him to go to Jeddah, take a ship from there and go to distant places. While he was sailing near these small islands, a storm wrecked his ship. Floating on a plank he was swept ashore on the island of Amini. Ubaidulla started propagating Islam in the islands.All these islands are the famous places to visit in Lakshadweep. One of the main attractions in the Lakshadweep Islands is the abundance of fisheries items and the variety of fishes from the Arabian Sea. Oceanic birds flying over the Islands is an eye catching experience.
Located 459 kms away from Cochin , Agatti hosts one of the most stunning lagoons in Lakshadweep . A virtual gateway to Lakshadweep , it is 6kms long and about 1000mts wide. It is virtual gateway to enter the island of Lakshadweep . Agatti hosts about 20-bed tourist complex to meet up with the growing needs of customers visiting here. Agatti has abundant coral growths and multi color fishes in the most beautiful lagoons of Lakshadweep . The climate here is hot as compared to the other islands.
Amini or Amidivi Island, the first and foremost human inhabited Island and densely populated, is famous for superior quality of coir products. The island with tropical climate is small area with only about 3 km long and 1.6 km width. History tells that this island was captured in the 16th century by the Portuguese and made as their colony, mainly attracted by the craft of making of coir ropes. Later British took over the control in 1799 till the merging of Lakshadweep with Indian Union. Island is famous for many beautiful craftworks, walking sticks beautifully made with the shells of tortoise and coconut and carved striking flower motifs on hard coral stones, are some important artifacts available here. Tourists can make a shopping for these valuable materials.
Andrott (Andretti) Island, the largest Island in Lakshdweep, is the closest Island to the mainland of India through Cochin. It is a densely populated island, situated with glamour and glare of natural beauty. The Island is blessed with many tourist attractions including many Buddhist archeological remains and the tomb of Saint Hazrat Ubaidullah. Andrott has the unique feature of lying in the east-west direction; all other islands are oriented in north-south direction. The island is dense with coconut palms and coir industry flourishes in this island. If the tourists are patient enough, they can catch hold of small species of octopus during the neap tides from sea shore in this island. This is a calm and attractive place to spend the evenings.
With a unique shape of a Tear, the Bangaram Island is bewitchingly beautiful and uninhabited island. It is encircled with an incessant nimbus of creamy sand. This place is ranked as one of the best gateways of the world. You can see the sun, sand and surf casting mesmerizing spells on the visitors, just like the other islands of Lakshadweep , lavish plantations and coolness of swaying coconut palms during the peak time in the day. Bangaram offers the tourists utmost privacy, unpolluted environ and loads of activities to do.
Kolkali and Parichakali are the two popular folk art forms in the Territory. They are an integral part of the cultural milieu except in Minicoy where "LAVA" is the most popular dance form. Some of the folk dances have a resemblance with those in North Eastern India. For marriages "OPPANA" is a common feature, a song sung by a lead singer and followed by a group of women. Picnics are a common leisure activity in Minicoy. The most widely celebrated festivals are Independence Day and Republic Day, Milad - Ul - Nabi, Idulfitr, Bakrid, and Muharram in that order. Interestingly Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated for days with religious fervor.
It is located at the distance of 407 kms from Cochin . It has a large lagoon, abundant coral growth, long sandy beaches, excellent water sports facilities and other great attractions. It is the only island that has lagoons both on the eastern and western sides. The Scuba diving Center has become the attraction for water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. Kalpeni, 287 kms away from Cochin, is famous for its scenic beauty. A huge lagoon encloses its small islets, namely, Tilakkam, Pitti and Cheriyam. Its biggest attraction is the huge bank of coral debris along the sides of eastern and southwestern shorelines. It is a progressive islands as far as the issues of tourists facilities to women education are concerned. Here you can swim or take up a reef walk or snorkel. A holiday visit to the Banyan factory and the lighthouse is included in your day's itinerary.
Kavaratti is the administrative capital since 1964. Located at the distance of 404 kms from Cochin , it is one of the most developed islands. Kavaratti has beautiful palm lagoon that forms a perfect spot for water sports, swimming and relaxing on the long and serene beaches. It has the highest percentage of non-islanders as the residents here. There are many mosques spread over the island. The most beautiful among all of them is the Ujra mosque.
The Dolphin Diver Center is the great attraction for the water sport lovers. If it is included in your travel package, you can come to the tourist huts here and stay. There is also an aquarium that hosts several multi color fishes. To view the marine life at its best, you can get a boat with a glass bottom. An informative Marine Aquarium and Museum, showcasing many marine related artifacts, is situated at Kavaratti, the Head Quarters of Lakshadweep. The Marine Museum is established in 1983 with the aim to promote the awareness of marine products and its preservation. It is the farthest island from Kavaratti Island , 200 kms away to south and 398 kms from Cochin . Minicoy has a peculiar culture that you may not fid at any other island. It is a second largest island, a cluster of 10 villages, with a systematically arranged village system, called Avah. It is an important center for tuna fishing and also famous for its tradition of lava dance. The Light House (1885) here is an important attraction here with its natural beauty and tourist facilities.
